Waypoints Mental Health Counseling Services, PLLC was started in June of 2021 by Kyle Austin. Rooted in the belief that we are constantly growing in new and different directions, with many starts, stops, pauses, and changes along the way, the vision at Waypoints springs from the idea that "it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end" (Ursela K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness).
Waypoints currently offers online individual counseling, couple's counseling and romantic relationship counseling, counseling for other relationship types, family counseling, and executive function coaching in Virginia and New York.
As a systems thinker, Kyle is passionate about justice, anti-racism, intersectionality, and celebrating all the unique and varied identities that make us who we are. In the therapeutic space, he recognizes the ways that culture, society, and history impact our daily lives and the ways that we show up in our relationships and interactions with others. He believes strongly in using a variety of evidence-based practices, integrating approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, bibliotherapy, and emotionally focused therapy (to name just a few) to tailor an approach that best meets the needs of the person or people with whom he is working. Kyle emphasizes strengths while offering optimism, hope, and support in trying new things in areas clients seek to change. As a psychology and neuroscience nerd, he also works to increase both self- and other-understanding through these lenses to aid in the therapeutic journey.
A Virginia native, Kyle moved to Brooklyn in the summer of 2020. As a self-avowed nerd, he enjoys science fiction and fantasy stories from all mediums and has been known to make frequent nerdy and pop culture references in both casual and professional conversation. When not counseling, he can usually be found gaming at home, reading in a coffee shop, or lovingly pestering his cats, Joffrey and Jon Snow. A musician at heart, Kyle has played the oboe and sung (not at the same time) for the vast majority of his life, and currently sings as a lower bass in one of the major choruses in New York City.
