Waypoints

Waypoints Mental Health Counseling Services, PLLC was started in June of 2021 by Kyle Austin. Rooted in the belief that we are constantly growing in new and different directions, with many starts, stops, pauses, and changes along the way, the vision at Waypoints springs from the idea that "it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end" (Ursela K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness).

Waypoints currently offers online individual counseling, couple's counseling and romantic relationship counseling, counseling for other relationship types, family counseling, and executive function coaching in Virginia and New York.

The Therapy

As a systems thinker, Kyle is passionate about justice, anti-racism, decolonial work, intersectionality, and celebrating all the unique and varied identities that make us who we are. In the therapeutic space, he recognizes the ways that culture, society, and history impact our daily lives and the ways that we show up in our relationships and interactions with others. He believes strongly in using a variety of evidence-based practices, integrating approaches such as cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, narrative and bibliotherapies, and emotionally focused and mindfulness therapies (to name just a few) to tailor an approach that best meets the needs of the person or people with whom he is working. Kyle emphasizes strengths while offering optimism, hope, and support in trying new things in areas clients seek to change. As a psychology, neuroscience, neurodiversity nerd, he also works with clients to increase both self- and other-understanding through these lenses to aid in the therapeutic journey.

Kyle has worked toward and gained extra education and certifications for work with those who have ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Presentation. In addition, he is currently working to complete requirements for both his AASECT CST (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists - Certified Sex Therapist) and his ISTI CSCT (Integrative Sex Therapy Institute - Certified Sex and Couple's Therapist).

Kyle

A Virginia native, Kyle moved to Brooklyn in the summer of 2020. As a self-avowed nerd, he enjoys science fiction and fantasy stories from all mediums and has been known to make frequent nerdy and pop culture references in both casual and professional conversation. When not counseling, he can usually be found gaming at home, reading in a coffee shop, or spending time adventuring near and far with friends, family, and loved ones. A musician at heart, Kyle has played the oboe and sung (not at the same time) for the vast majority of his life, and is currently (very slowly) learning the art of music composition.
